Montgomery Zoo maps go digital

In an effort to reduce paper use, save trees, and reduce litter on the Zoo grounds, we are going digital with our Zoo map. Simply scan the QR codes provided throughout the Zoo, and use your phone to navigate throughout the Zoo and Museum.

By going digital, this also allows to communicate more up-to-date animal, exhibit, and attraction information. It is a win-win for both our guests and the environment.

Plastic-free packaging and reduction of bags

Our Zoo Gift Shop has done a great job of reducing the amount of plastic that enters our nation's landfills daily.  If you have noticed, all the toy packages no longer have plastic. This a huge win for the environment and for animals throughout the world.

Also, our Gift Shop has stopped using plastic bags.  They have converted to no-bag policy; however, if you more than $30 guest receive a complimentary cloth bag sporting the Montgomery Zoo logo.

These are just a few and simple ways we are recycling, reducing, and repurposing items here at the Montgomery Zoo.

July/August 2020

Welcome back!

The Montgomery Zoo is now open its regular hours, Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm with the last admission at 4:00 pm.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of our guests, members, Zoo staff, and the animals in our care, we have implemented enhanced protocols and procedures in an effort to assist our community in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We graciously ask that all our visitors abide by these requests for the sake of everyone visiting the Zoo.

These modifications will ensure guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control, State of Alabama, Alabama Department of Public Health, and the City of Montgomery regarding capacity, social distancing, and sanitizing are followed for the health, safety of our guests, staff, and animals.

We strongly suggest all guests wear masks while visiting the Zoo. All Zoo staff members will be required to wear a face-covering when directly involved with the public, when a six-foot distance cannot be maintained, or when in a gathering of 10 or more people. This in compliance with the City of Montgomery Face Mask / Covering Ordinance, effective Tuesday, July 7, 2020, and the Alabama Face Mask Ordinance, effective Thursday, July 16, 2020.

Full details of the modified operations can be found on the Zoo’s website at montgomeryzoo.com.

Let’s put our Thumbs UP for Tigers

International Tiger Day (also known as Global Tiger Day) is celebrated every year on July 29 to raise awareness about tiger conservation, promote the protection of natural habitat of tigers and support tiger conservation issues. The annual day is celebrated with the slogan “Their survival is in our hands.”

While bringing awareness on the conservation of animals is part of our everyday mission, want to take this special day to educate our guests on the importance tigers (all nine species) in zoos and in the wild, bring awareness of their plight in the wild and share what people can do to help save these magnificent cats.

Their survival is in our hands. We cannot allow them to become extinct on our watch!

The day will be filled with tiger wildlife adventures and fun. Swing by the Bengal Tiger exhibit in the Zoo’s Asia section from 10am – 2pm and visit with our team of Tiger keepers.

For more information on how you can help save the tigers and enjoy all of the fun activities at the Zoo on July 29 visit montgomeryzoo.com.

Join the Montgomery Zoo Saturday, August 1, 10am – 2pm, for VIRTUAL Animal Enrichment Day. For the safety of our guests, staff and animals during the Covid-19 crisis, Animal Enrichment Day will be a little different. We will tour the Zoo VIRTUALLY during our enrichment event and observe how animals respond to an assortment of new creative and behavior-stimulating enrichment items.

Animal Enrichment is how we safely stimulate and reproduce behaviors that are natural for each animal in the wild. Placing different stimuli in the animals’ environment allows animals to use their five basic senses while they exercise. It is a lot of trial and error, but it is always fun!

Our Zookeepers give the animals enrichment daily, but twice a year we like to give our guests a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes.

All the action can be watched on our Facebook page, YouTube Channel and website.

For more information about animal enrichment and a full schedule of activities visit our website, montgomeryzoo.com
