 Presidents Day

AED WA pic 2020-01Join the Montgomery Zoo Saturday, February 15, 10am – 2pm, for Animal Enrichment Day. Tour the Zoo during our enrichment event and observe how animals respond to an assortment of new creative and behavior-stimulating enrichment items.

More than 15 species will take part in the semi-annual event, including the tigers, elephants, chimpanzees, and jaguars. Presented in the form of special toys, unique scents, puzzles, boxed goodies or food treats, the enrichment items provide Zoo animals with both mental and physical exercise. With winter temperatures, many of the items will have a cooling or warming effect.

Our animals’ well-being, health, and happiness is supported through opportunities to smell novel scents, taste different flavors, and explore new puzzles. Enrichment keeps them active and engaged while reproducing their natural behaviors. From zoo animals to our pets and even ourselves, we all need enrichment.

The goal of Animal Enrichment Day is to safely stimulate and reproduce behaviors that are natural for each animal in the wild. Placing different stimuli in the animals’ environment allows animals to use their five basic senses while they exercise. It is a lot of trial and error, but it is always fun.

The Zoo consults with national animal enrichment databases developed by government agencies and other zoos for assistance in selecting enrichment items. Zoo staff members evaluate enrichment items and approve them based on certain requirements.

The Montgomery Zoo provides enrichment to its animals on a daily basis, but this often takes place out of view from the public. Animal Enrichment Day allows the Zoo to share a daily activity with our guests and present it on a grander scale.

Check for the list of animals participating and more.

Serve Day Graphic 2-29-2020 Volunteers at the Montgomery Zoo are very important people and play a vital role in the success of the Montgomery Zoo. We are looking for energetic individuals who want to volunteer in a beautiful and fun place. Volunteer commitment has allowed our Zoo to improve, expand programs, generate community involvement and support, and assist Zoo staff in daily Zoo operations.

Zoo Serve Day. We are picking a single day to gather volunteer groups to accomplish several tasks; including landscaping, trimming bushes, planting flowers, raking leaves, painting, and overall prepping the Zoo for upcoming events. It will be a great opportunity for those people that volunteer their time and energy to give back to the City of Montgomery Zoo and the River Region community.

Volunteers can be adults, teens, civic groups, school groups, church groups, businesses, military squadrons, and families. Volunteers ages 12-16 years old must be accompanied by a parent / legal guardian or a designated group chaperone. Volunteers under the age of 19 must obtain parent / legal guardian permission to volunteer. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept court ordered community service at this time.

To make it more convenient for our volunteers we have the following shifts available:

All Day: 9am - 4pm | Morning: 9am - 12pm (noon) | Afternoon - 1 pm - 4 pm

Contact Melanie Golson, Volunteer Coordinator, to Register

Add Some WILD to Your Next Gathering

Let us bring the Zoo to YOU!

Teaching about our animals and conservation efforts is key to ensuring that the next generation can enjoy every creature large and small. This is the main goal of Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum Education Department’s Zoo 2 Go programs.

All of our education programs can be adapted to meet a variety of age groups from pre-K to seniors. Programs may be done on location at your day care, school, church, senior living facility, neighborhood association or civic group meeting. We can even add more to your group’s visit to the Zoo with a program on-site in our indoor classroom or outdoor pavilion.

Call the Zoo at 334-625-4900 for more information or to book your program.
