In conjunction with the Montgomery Zoo, the City of Montgomery, Alabama and the Zoo staff, a residing board of River Region citizens and local business people aid in Zoo fundraising efforts, marketing and promotion, membership drives, education and conservation work.
The mission of the Montgomery Zoo and the Montgomery Area Zoological Society is to:
> improve the future for wildlife by exhibiting animals and plants;
> provide educational and conservation programs;
> to encourage respect and stewardship of the natural world; and
> teach better understanding of our place within the world we share.
Mission goals
Goal 1: The Zoo will provide for the health and well-being of the animals in its care.
Goal 2: The Zoo will be a leader and innovator in wildlife conservation.
Goal 3: The Zoo will be an enjoyable year-round facility for all ages and income levels.
Goal 4: The Zoo will have a high quality and diverse conservation and education program.
Goal 5: The Zoo’s plant and animal collection will be available and utilized for study and research which creates better understanding of our natural environment.
The Montgomery Area Zoological Society is broken into two basic committees working together as one. The Executive Committee consists of the Board President, Vice President, Treasure, Secretary, Immediate Past President and Member Emeritus. The Genera Board is broken into five committees where each member is selected to work in a specific area. These committees are: fundraising, membership, special events, tourism and long-range planning. Their objectives are listed below.
I. Fundraising
Objectives
- Recommendations for increasing MAZS revenue
- Solicit private/public foundations for funding in coordination with the Zoo Director, Zoo Deputy Director and Long-range Planning Committee’s recommendations
- Solicit appropriate local and state representatives for monies in coordination with the
Director, Deputy Director and Long-range Planning Committee’s recommendations
Objectives specific to Fundraising
- Coordinate with Zoo and local/regional/national businesses to raise funds for the
Zoo and/or Museum
- Work with local/regional/national businesses concerning event and corporate sponsorship
- Solicit regional/local/national business partners/sponsors in an effort to cross-promote
the Zoo and/or Museum
- Cross promote Zoo and Museum to local/regional businesses to build public awareness
- Seek/apply for federal/government/charitable grants for expansion, development and
education needs
II. Membership
Objectives
- Assist with membership drives, collateral material development and renewal mailings
- Assist with corporate memberships involving local, regional and national businesses
- Assist with special event mailings, providing contacts and contact information
- Review membership brochure/benefits -- pricing and overall value, etc
- Provide input and creative ideas from others venues, organizations and zoos
- Develop marketing piece featuring savings from zoo membership (promote value)
- Corporate, Individual, Family, Grandparents and Upper-level donors
- Develop more efficient and effect manner to process membership information and cards
- Cross market the Zoo/Museum when possible
- Work directly with Special Events committee to combine efforts
- Hold membership drives during special events, cross-promote each other’s efforts
III. Special Events
Objectives
- Attend special event meetings at the Zoo office and work as a liaison between the MAZS and the Zoo/Museum
- Coordinate Board involvement for each special event i.e., Animal Enrichment Day (2), Zoo Weekend, Earth Day Safari (2), Zoobilation, ZooBoo and Christmas Lights Festival
- Membership Table
- Brick Sale
- Animal Adoptions
- Bake Sale
- Ticket Sales, etc.
- Assist in special event mailings, specifically for grand openings and MAZS hosted events
- Assist with the overall marketing thrust of activities during special events (i.e., hang posters, work with local media (TV/newspaper interviews), help decorate, etc.)
IV. Tourism
Objectives
- Coordinate with local and regional hotel chains, social/civic groups and tourist organizations
- Distribute brochures/marketing materials to hotels, visitor centers and tourist organizations
- Research, create and promote tour packages
- Work with Chamber of Commerce to develop tourism packages with other local attractions
- Cross-market Zoo/Museum with other local attractions and/or events
- Individual and cross promote Zoo/Museum events with other local events
- Attend meetings to advise the Zoo on ways to promote and market the Zoo and Museum
- Work with Special Events and Long-range Planning committees to keep local and regional
hotel chains, social/civic groups and tourist organizations aware of Zoo events and new exhibits
V. Long-range planning
Objectives
- Work directly with Director and Deputy Director to formulate goals and 5-year plan for Zoo
- Develop recommendations for increasing MAZS revenue
- Work directly with Fundraising and Special Events committees to raise funds to meets goals
and objectives laid out by Director, Deputy Director and Zoo’s five-year plan
- Identify and solicit appropriate local/regional/national private and/or public foundations and state representatives for partnership, grants, funds, etc.
- Cross promote Zoo and Museum to local/regional businesses to build public awareness
- Seek out federal and government grants for expansion, development and educational needs
- When grants and monies are awarded, develop plan with Director and Deputy Director on
how funds will be spent and allocated
- Develop and place into action ways to increase Zoobilation awareness and attendance
