Recently we have tried a new enrichment technique. We give certain animals the opportunity to paint on canvas. Using non-toxic finger paints and art supplies we have found that painting can be stimulating for chimpanzees, spider & squirrel monkeys, siamangs, giant anteaters, giraffes, and some of the birds in our collection. They create unique, one of a kind abstract art, which is quite beautiful. This art has served a second purpose as a fundraiser, with great potential. Money generated from the sale of this art is to be used by a committee of Montgomery Zoo animal care staff for continuing education and conservation projects. These paintings are sold at zoo special events and by special order, prices vary from $45 to $200 depending on canvas size and frame. Included with the painting is a photograph of that specific animal in the process of creating the art. You can own one of these unique works of art if you desire.
