The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1924, which offers accreditation to zoos or aquariums that follow standards set by it’s more than 200 members. In order to be considered for accreditation, institutions must submit to inspections by a team of peers from other AZA facilities. Zoos and aquariums which are granted membership must achieve certain standards in the areas of animal care, community education, and participation in wildlife conservation programs. Accredited is an ongoing process and institutions have to comply with constant improvements and changes in standards. These institutions are usually given accreditation through a five year period. Zoos and aquariums must resubmit to inspections, show improvements and keep up on the latest science in order to retain their accreditation. This process ensures that animals in AZA institutions are receiving the best possible care from highly qualified staff, in modern facilities that represent the state-of-the art in our profession. The species included in the collection must be managed on a regional basis to ensure long-term genetic viability of the species, which means careful planning of resource allocation, ex-situ breeding, and ex-situ/in-situ conservation and research. On the AZA website, you can search zoos and aquariums by state. Accreditation by the Association truly means you are visiting a zoo or aquarium committed to the health and well being of its animals, its guests, and to conservation efforts in the wild. The Montgomery Zoo has been accredited by the AZA since 1972.
